LONGPORT – Police here ended their chase of a stolen vehicle Sunday afternoon, as required by state law.
At 3:09 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, officers observed a black BMW X6 near 11th and Atlantic avenues and a registration check revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Newark. An officer attempted a vehicle stop at S. 20th and Atlantic avenues, but the driver fled at a high speed over the JFK Bridge.
In accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Vehicular Pursuit Policy, officers ended their pursuit and notified surrounding law enforcement agencies, providing the vehicle’s registration and identifying information.
It was not revealed if the vehicle was located by other police departments in the area.
Police advised residents and visitors to be vigilant if they see any suspicious activities and immediately call the police. They repeated often relayed advice about taking steps to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
“We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents and visitors that motor vehicle thefts are often crimes of opportunity. Please remember to lock your vehicle, remove your keys or key fob, secure your belongings, and never leave your vehicle running while unattended,” the release posted on Facebook advised. “Public safety is a shared responsibility. By remaining alert and looking out for one another, we can continue working together to keep our community safe.”
