MARGATE – Dark clouds and threatening skies didn’t keep people from attending the 25th annual 911 Memorial Service held at Firehouse No. 1 on Washington and Atlantic avenues. Crowds huddled under tents while others stood in the light rain holding umbrellas.
Dignitaries spoke about never to forget what happened on that fateful day and told stories of what has happened that day 25 years ago when America was attacked by zealots. Religious leaders told solemn stories and read from scriptures. They offered prayers of remembrance for the victims, the families and the victims who continue to suffer and die from the after effects of that dreadful day.
Margate Fire Chief Dan Adams reminded everyone how members of fire departments rushed to the scene with hopes of rescuing people only to find that their efforts were to be a recovery mission.
As has been his tradition, Chief Adams told a story about 911. This time, about a young All Star Little League player, Michael Cammarata, who wanted to be a fireman. He became a fireman and worked in Ladder Company 11. At the young age of 22, Michael perished when he responded to the World Trade Center with his company. He was last seen helping people at the Marriott World Trade Center hotel (World Trade Center 3) before the tower collapsed.
Ironically, he played the 9th position in Little League and his number was 11. Posthumously, he was entered into the Little League Hall of Excellence. In his honor, jersey number 11 has since been retired in Little League.
