LONGPORT – Just days after four teens stole a $220,000 Mercedes G-Wagon from a Longport residence resulting in a violent head-on collision in downtown Mays Landing that killed two innocent Egg Harbor Township residents, another teen was arrested for carjacking.
Police conducted an investigation using security video footage and other technology based techniques and coordinated with the Atlantic City Police Department to identify the juvenile suspect, who was apprehended and processed on charges out of Longport and Atlantic City.
At 4:20 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, police were called to the 100-block of S. 28th Avenue for the report of a stolen vehicle. The owner encountered the suspects inside her vehicle and they fled recklessly in the vehicle.
The unidentified suspect was lodged at the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center on various charges, including first-degree carjacking, second-degree robbery, second-degree theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree conspiracy to commit theft, and fourth-degree joyriding.
Police used this incident to remind members of the public to lock their vehicles, remove valuables and never leave the keys or key fob in the vehicle.
“Vehicle related crimes continue to impact communities throughout our area, and taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the opportunity for theft,” a release stated.
The Atlantic City Police Department and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office assisted the investigation.
