MARGATE – A local firefighter who has completed fetes of daring by running in marathons and long-distance runs, has followed through with his promise to raise money and donate it to a worthy cause in honor of his mother’s 63rd birthday.
Margate Firefighter Chris Fantazzia, 30, this week delivered on his promise and presented a $23,969 check representing money he raised online to help children battling cancer at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Neurosurgery Center.
On July 3, Fantazzia, who ran the Atlantic City Half-Marathon in full turnout gear in spring, completed a 70-mile run from Independence Hall in Philadelphia to Lucy the Elephant in Margate. He ran in 20-mile increments during a blistering heat wave, stopping for nourishment and rest, and completed the trek in 14 hours.
“This wasn’t just about running miles – it was about giving hope, supporting families, and making a difference for kids who are fighting battles far greater than any finish line,” Fantazzia posted on his Facebook page yesterday. “None of this would have been possible without everyone who donated, shared, encouraged, and stood behind this mission. Every dollar, every message, and every bit of support helped make this happen.”
Fantazzia thanked his family and the contributors for being with him during every step of his run.
“This check represents what can happen when a community comes together for something bigger than themselves,” he wrote.
Prior to the 70-mile run, the longest distance he ever completed was 30 miles. He achieved most of what he set out to do, including giving his mom, Kim, whom he said is difficult to buy for, the gift of a lifetime.
His original goal was $25,000 to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary, and came quite close to achieving the full amount.
