MARGATE – Out of an abundance of caution regarding a severe weather forecast for this Saturday, the Save Lucy Committee has rescheduled Lucy the Elephant’s 145th birthday party.
The event will be held in two weeks on Saturday, Aug. 1.
“Our primary concern is always about the safety of our staff, volunteers and guests,” board President Jason Tell said in a Facebook post. “With the forecast calling for heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms, and damaging winds, plus an air quality warning, we had no choice but to postpone and reschedule.”
The new date will offer all the red, white, and blue pageantry planned for the original date – a triple play celebration honoring Lucy’s 145th birthday, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Save Lucy Committee, which saved Lucy from the wrecking ball.
Lucy is already sprucing up for the big day and recently got a mani-pedi painted in red, white and blue. Her benefactors and supporters are planning a birthday bash that includes food, games, tours, family-friendly activities, and plenty of birthday fun. Birthday cupcakes will be shared at 3 p.m.
Admission to the party is free. Tickets required for certain activities.
If you can’t make the party, be sure to visit Lucy anytime. She’s open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through summer at Atlantic and Decatur avenues. The Lucy Gift Shop across Atlantic Avenue has all the Lucy merch you need to make your visit memorable.
