OCEAN CITY – Police here have confirmed the identity of a body found near 72nd Street last week as that of a swimmer that went missing in Ocean City last month.

According to a release from Lt. Dan Lancaster of the Ocean City Police Department, the Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the male as the swimmer who went missing from the 10 Street beach in Ocean City around 5 p.m. on May 18.

Sea Isle City and Ocean City Police, NJState Police and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office responded June 19 to the discovery of the body near 72nd Street, conducted an investigation and identified the body as that of the missing Ocean City swimmer.

“The family has been notified and has requested privacy at this time and no additional information will be released,” the release stated.

Police thanked all agencies involved in the search and recovery process.

Members of the Ocean City Fire and Police departments, along with the NJ State Police and U.S. Coast Guard, searched for the 20-year-old boogie boarder for three days before the search switched to a recovery mission.

The Longport Volunteer Fire Department and the Cape May County Drone Task Force were deployed in the effort.

According to published reports, the man was boogie boarding with a friend when he was hit by a wave, went under the water and did not surface. His partner, yet to be identified, was able to be rescued.

Public safety officials advise visitors to swim only where a lifeguard is present.
