EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Fourteen members of the Longport Volunteer Fire Department attended training Monday at the Atlantic County Fire Training Center on English Creek Avenue to learn propane firefighting operations.

The training simulated fires involving a propane gas grill as well as an upright propane cylinder.

With the summer season kicking into high gear, the chances of responding to a propane grill fire increase dramatically.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Dan Adams, all firefighters performed under realistic conditions assuring that the safety of all personnel was the priority.

“A special thank you to the staff instructors at the Atlantic County Fire Training Center for bringing this training to fruition,” he said.

Chief Lefty Clayton and Adams took advantage of the training exercise to educate the public about how to protect against BBQ grill fires.

Fire Safety Measures include:

  • Maintain a safe distance. Keep grills at least 10 feet from siding, eaves, overhanging branches and deck railings.
  • Always open the lid before lighting a gas grill. Check hoses for cracks or leaks using soapy water and turn off both the burner knobs and the cylinder valve when done.
  • Only use standard charcoal starter fluid. Never add fluid or gasoline to an already lit or warm fire. Once finished, allow coals to cool completely for at least 24 hours before disposing of them in a metal container with a lid.
  • Regularly clean grease buildup from the grill and the bottom trays to prevent dangerous flare-ups.
