EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP –  The Atlantic County Utilities Authority recently accepted the 2026 Impact Award from the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition, highlighting its statewide leadership in clean transportation.

“This award recognizes ACUA’s significant and measurable impact on reducing emissions, promoting clean transportation, and advancing sustainability,” NJ Clean Cities Coalition Board Chairman Chuck Feinberg said.

The award was presented during the recent Fleet Sustainability Expo hosted by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

“The award reflects ACUA’s longstanding commitment to exploring and implementing alternative fuels,” ACUA President Matthew DeNafo said. “By using clean fuels, ACUA continues to advance its mission of protecting the environment and serving our communities responsibly,”

ACUA’s fleet policy guides its ongoing efforts to convert vehicles and equipment to alternative fuels whenever available and cost-effective.  It currently provides waste and recycling collection services to 23 municpalities across South Jersey in trucks fueled with compressed natural gas (CNG), a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel fuel.

“Residents can trust that reducing air emissions is a priority when they see ACUA vehicles drive through their neighborhood,” DeNafo said.

Since making the transition from diesel in 2010, ACUA has displaced more than 11,746 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and saved more than $7.3 million in fuel costs. While diesel prices soar, ACUA pays an average of $1.92 per diesel gallon equivalent for CNG.

“The decision to switch to CNG has delivered long-term benefits to ACUA and its customers,” DeNafo said.

In addition to its CNG fleet, ACUA has also incorporated 20 hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric vehicles across its operations to further reduce emissions.

By investing in and prioritizing alternative fuels, ACUA continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving air quality and reducing its environmental impact throughout its operations.
